Cary Joji Fukunaga

Cary Joji Fukunaga is a writer, director, and cinematographer whose first film Sin Nombre, was critically acclaimed and catapulted Fukunaga into the limelight as a director to watch. The film, which Fukunaga wrote and directed, was a thriller about the collision of a gang member on the run from his violent past and a Honduran teenager traveling with her family through Mexico in hopes of finding a better life in the U.S. It premiered in dramatic competition at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the U.S. Dramatic Directing Award and the U.S. Dramatic Excellence in Cinematography Award.

Jane Eyre followed Sin Nombre. Starring Michael Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska the film was critically acclaimed and was nominated at both the BAFTA and Academy Awards.

Most recently, Cary created and directed the HBO show True Detective, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

Fukunaga launched his career as a second-year NYU Film School student with the short, Victoria Para Chino, which screened at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and went on to earn more than two dozen international awards, including the Silver Medal at the Student Academy Awards and an honourable mention from BAFTA’s Los Angeles chapter.

The early promise of Fukunaga’s work also led to many prestigious grants, including a 2008 USA Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship, the John H. Johnson Film Award, and a 2005 Princess Grace Foundation Fellowship. In 2007, he received a Katrin Cartlidge Foundation Bursary.

His first commercial was a moving :60 piece for the Levi’s Go Forth campaign. Working closely with W+K, Portland, Fukunaga tapped into the unbendable reputation of the Levi’s brand, the optimism of a generation recharged by recent political change, and the authority of an American icon to create the award-winning spot.

This was followed by the launch film for the Sony PS Vita The World is in Play campaign. Another beautifully crafted piece, it embraced the metaphor of gamers interacting with the world around them and each other.

The California native is an M.F.A. candidate from New York University’s Graduate Film Program, and a graduate of the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Joel Kefali

Joel Kefali

Joel Kefali is an acclaimed filmmaker and designer known for finding magic in the mundane. He has directed iconic music videos for global superstars Lorde, Katy Perry, LCD Soundsystem and Alicia Keys; and worked with major international brands including Lexus, Tiger Beer, Nissan, Steinlager, Australian Defence Force and even left his mark on the Got Milk campaign with Goodby Silverstein & Partners. Joel originally aspired to be a furniture designer and completed a Bachelor of Design with honours. However, his passion for design saw him branch out his degree with a major in Painting and minor in Animation and Editing. It was here he developed a versatility that would colour the rest of his career. In 2007, he founded the highly successful creative studio, Special Problems. Together with his directing partner, they created an impressive portfolio of album artwork, fashion films, brand design and highly distinctive music videos that saw them win awards and accolades from big names in music such as Kanye West. Special Problem’s success led to directing commercials for global brands, including technology giant HP, and short film ‘Echoes’, commissioned by The Weinstein Company to screen at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2013, Joel decided to pursue an independent directing career and went on to achieve his greatest successes to date. He was entrusted with Lorde’s breakthrough video for the US #1 hit ‘Royals’, which won Best Rock Video at the MTV VMAs and Best International Music Video at the MMVAs. It put him on the map and before long Katy Perry was knocking on his door to direct the music video for her hit song ‘This Is How We Do’. The New Zealand native still works across a variety of formats and styles, from choreography to bold understated, cinematic realism and everything in between. Whether it’s music videos or commercials, Joel’s philosophy is simple: “Building brands, crafting a unique and compelling way for them to communicate to the world. It doesn't matter whether that's working with Lorde, Katy Perry or Hewlett Packard – it's high stakes for all of them. They've got something to say and my job is to help them say it in the most interesting and engaging way possible.”

Ed Morris

Ed Morris

With an Instagram feed dedicated purely to his film photography, a photography book soon to be released, and an appearance in the 2017 Creative Review Photography Annual, it is fair to say Ed is a certified image and picture obsessive. Aside from the feature film he has currently in production, Ed has made fast headway in to the music industry and has worked with artists including Ibeyi, Massive Attack, Lee Scratch Perry and more. He was credited on Ibeyi’s debut album Ash for directing all released videos, and most recently was the resident photographer in Richard Russell's studio as he embarked upon recording his debut album Everything is Recorded (XL Recordings). All photography of the contributing artists featured was taken by Ed. His music videos ‘Mad Lifeline’ for Robert del Naja (Massive Attack) and ‘Come Near Me’ for Massive Attack have both been screened at the LA’s Hammer Museum, and his Lee Scratch Perry “I AM PAINT” project with Richard Russell resulted in the release being voted as the most collectable record of the year by The Vinyl Factory. With his varied interests and background in writing Ed brings an abundance of ideas to the table of any collaboration.

Jack Whiteley

Jack Whiteley

Jack Whiteley is the latest director to join the Rattling Stick roster. An exciting new talent, Jack has developed an impressive body of work in the short amount of time since graduating.
Born and raised in the wilds of Shropshire, Jack left the Shire to forge his way in the world of filmmaking and hasn’t looked back since. A Jack-of-all-filmic-trades, he is a deft hand at directing, cinematography and editing.
After passing on a career in fine art Jack honed his skills in practical filmmaking at the Manchester School of Art, graduating with a First-Class Honours degree in 2008. The course enabled Jack the freedom to explore and understand the filmmaking process and instilled in him an understanding of narrative, and more specifically short-form narrative, a learning that underpins his work today.
Since graduating, Jack has set up home in the great port city of Liverpool where he has established himself as one of the city’s leading freelance filmmakers. Working primarily within the field of music videography, Jack has developed a unique style for capturing action and performance. His work is defined by its energy and rhythm as well as by its rich and captivating imagery.
Jack made his promo debut 18 months ago for Stealing Sheep’s ‘I am the Rain’. This was followed shortly by a trip to Bulgaria to shoot a promo for Norwegian artist Mikhael Paskalev for his summer 2012 single ‘Jive Babe’. The resultant piece has led to much critical acclaim for Jack, culminating in his being shortlisted for the Cannes 2013 YDA.
Jack is very excited about the next stage of his career and the opportunities that will arise. He is looking forward to further developing his music video portfolio and taking his first brave steps into the world of commercials and content-driven filmmaking.
