In the past eight years, domestic violence has increased by more than 700% in South Korea – but only 2% of cases are reported to the police. Part of the difficulty is being able to sound the alarm in the first place. But now a new distress code has been created, inspired by Morse. Callers to the emergency services just have to tap the same number twice. The operator then triggers various tools (activating the victim’s camera, detecting their location, and opening a chat disguised as a Google search page) to ensure the person gets help. An integrated campaign spread the word, especially in places where it would more easily reach women, such as beauty salons and hairdressers.
