Web Editor/Audience Engagement Coordinator Job Description
The Progressive, a 110-year-old national political magazine based in Madison, Wisconsin, is looking for Digital Editor/Audience Engagement Expert with a strong passion for politics. This person will take the lead in running our website and developing a social audience engagement strategy for the pieces we publish. The perfect candidate will be on top of the latest in digital innovations in online news distribution and audience engagement, enjoy a fast-paced and collaborative work environment, and be passionate about broadcasting the mission of The Progressive.
This is a full-time, union position working in our office in Madison, Wisconsin.
Develops strategy for website and online media. Supervise flow of web content. Solicit, edit, and create online content. Work with the other editors in crafting a social media presence that best features our writers and our editorial voice. Work with Editor, Publisher, and Development Director in strategies to promote Progressive content and support grant development for special projects. Report on the results of online audience engagement efforts.
Track and boost magazine circulation, drive traffic to the website, and help generate revenue through audience engagement. This is a position for an energetic, motivated, and committed person with particular knowledge about how to cultivate and keep readers, and turn them into financial supporters. This position will work closely with all staff members, but is supervised by the Publisher.
*Work directly with outside writers in writing, rewriting, editing, and copyediting material; Propose possible article ideas and authors; Read and review submissions for possible website publication; Report and write articles and general editorial copy for The Progressive and progressive.org; Manage editorial/social media interns.
*Oversee the magazine’s circulation and direct efforts to increase it, through magazine, web, and social media appeals.
*Lead team efforts to promote magazine and web content through social media.
*Contribute to strategic planning for magazine and web growth.
*Develop strategies to maximize income from website through newsletters, advertising, and donations.
*Lead efforts to dramatically boost audience for certain features and stories, and using that expanded access to encourage subscriptions, donations, and newsletter subscribers.
*Work with Development Director to devise ways to turn readers into donors.
*Master and apply The Progressive’s publication style and usage rules.
*Work with interns on tasks related to overall job duties.
*Represent the magazine and website in dealings with the public; may include media outreach and appearances.
*Create and maintain appropriate reports on magazine circulation and website engagement for staff and Board.
*Monitor and keep informed about the development of audience engagement strategies used by others in the field.
*Work with Development Director to create strategies that will maximize income from website through newsletters, advertising, and donations.
This is a full-time union salaried position based in Madison, Wisconsin. Starting salary $36,000 to $40,000 annually, depending on experience.
