About BBW University of Applied Science

In 2007, the Bildungswerk der Wirtschaft in Berlin und Brandenburg (bbw) founded a private university in response to the rise in the demand for well-qualified academic professionals. The school has grown quickly since then and has now established itself as the second-largest private institution of higher education in the region with currently over 900 students.

The bbw Akademie für Betriebswirtschaftliche Weiterbildung GmbH is the responsible body for the private, government-certified bbw University of Applied Sciences. It is also supported by strong regional business partners as well as its collaborative academic partner, the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin (HTW). The bbw University of Applied Sciences offers both Bachelors and Masters courses. For a Bachelor's course, you can choose between three main subject groups with various specializations. For Masters' programs, there are three individual interdisciplinary courses to choose from. The courses may be attended as a part-time extra-occupational course (starting on March 1st or September 1st) or on a full-time basis (starting on April 1st and October 1st).This fills a gap in the German educational system at long last through a greater penetrability. The growing complexity facing companies today can only be tackled with well trained employees. The bbw University of Applied Sciences takes this into account in its course curriculums.

Management of Creative Industries

Master_MCI
Creative industries have become a relevant part of our economy. The digital shift is a major driver. Berlin is a booming hotspot in the sector. Almost on a weekly basis, international players start activities in the city. Founders of all nationalities set up countless startups here. The main reasons for the attractiveness of Berlin are the tolerant and open atmosphere, its internationality, but also hard factors such as relatively low costs of living and rent and a large pool of dedicated and highly qualified professionals. However, when the growth continues or even expands, the city will need a continuous feed of specialists. The impact on the educational system is yet unexplored. For the first time, a German university of applied science is starting a master program, dedicated to the management of the creative industries as a whole. This holistic approach has the advantage, that it enables proactive responses to the drastic changes within the industry. We look mainly onto the transversal subjects of different creative industries. It also can apply new emerging competences such as trans- sectorial intellectual property management, crowd funding and community based marketing. Management of creative industries follows an holistic approach. Management traditions and the crafts of the sectors are still relatively different. On the other side, transversal competences emerge, which are specific to more or less all sectors of the creative economy. Additionally, the sectorial break-up of the creative economy is shifting drastically - creative industries are increasingly characterized by a growing interdisciplinary dynamic. Disruptive innovations, the profession's specificities and constantly new inputs will enhance the challenge to keep the open, holistic approach without becoming pointless and superficial. Therefore, it is important to set up a very concrete "hands on” education so that we can keep our promise towards the students.
